Don Blankenship is no mystery
Don Blankenship has written a piece for the Wayne County News explaining who he is and what he's up to.The only place I can find the essay on the Internet is on Don Surber's Blog. He may have transcribed it directly from the newspaper and I appreciate that.
First and foremost, I wouldn't want to stop Blankenship from trying to upset the political power structure in West Virginia. It's his right and, after reading his essay, I believe it's his cause.
He really beleives that politics is West Virginia's downfall, that everything can be laid at the feet of the people who write and enforce the rules.
I believe that the people we put in office is a reflection of the people who put them there. If so, we are in sad, sad shape in West Virginia and thus our problems can be laid directly at the feet of those who go to the polls, or don't go to the polls as the case may be.
I have news for Don. Things won't change, particularly in his native region of Southern West Virginia, until the people change. And his campaign which intends to tell the people just how corrupt some of our politicians are won't work until the people change.
Changing people's hearts and minds is damn near impossible. He's asking folks in Mingo COunty to give up any chance of getting their gravel roads and even their driveways maintained by the state every election year for a system that treats everyone fairly. Too many of these folks don't want fairness. They want their share of government resources and to hell with everyone else.
My dad was much like Don Blankenship, althouigh he wasn't rich and vertainly not famous. I don't know how many times he told me "Can't never did nothin' until he tried." I wonder if that same saying was told to Don when he was a kid. It sounds like it. That's what his essay is all about.
The same things that bother Blanksnehip about West Virignia, at least those stated in his essay, bother me as well. I am a bit concerned about what else bothers him, things that he's not saying he wants changed.
What blankenship has undertaken essentially is an "educational campaign." What's needed in West Virginia, particularly Southern West Virginia, is a long term grass roots educational campaign to make basic changes in a culture that allows political corruption.
And that cost much more than the few million Blankenship intends to commit.

Here's my problem with Blankenship, aside from feeling like his attention should be on the "accidents" that have plagued massey and rivers for the past few years - should any one person who admittedly has an agenda - be able to exert that much more influence over politics when the rest of us are severely limited by our pocketbooks? As a concerned citizens of wv, ask your delegates in Charleston why they haven't attempted to regulate ATV. Already 49 deaths this year. I'll tell you, "money". They think this is going to be their cash-cow for wv.so they look over these accidents.You're worried about Massey's "accidents"in our rivers, well why hasn't the thousands of sewage lines running into our rivers been addressed for over 50 years of Dem. control, well again it would probable cost some politicans votes.I bet Don Blankenship's sewage doesn't run into our rivers. Ok, first of all, the delegates have been trying to regulate and make ATV riding safer. The problem is in the enforcement. The delegates aren't out on the back roads or trails where the accidents happen. It's the local "law enforcement" who wave at ATV's driven by 14 year olds without helmets and 2 other passengers. I know this from personal experience; it happens all the time in my town. So maybe you shouldn't be so concerned with our state's representatives and a little more concerned about the people who are supposedly "protecting" us.
No the delegates haven't regulated ATV in WV. I do hold them responsible for all these accidents. If this was a company in WV having this many accidents the representatives would be raising all kinds of hell. Look at all the regulations they place on coal co. each time there is an accident. You might not hold our delegates responsible for this mess but anyone with any common sense does. Who makes the laws and makes sure they are enforced. The small town law enforcement does exactly what they are told. We can't get to strict with the ATV riders or they might not come back and spend money in our state. You can sprout off about whatever you want to, but you know why there is no regulation on ATV. I repeat WV's cash-cow.
Dave: for what it's worth, politics are no different here in OH than they are in WV, or anywhere else in the country for that matter.
The root issue is that the public is too lazy to do anything except complain. There's a saying that goes: "There a three kinds of people in the world: 1) people who make things happen; 2) people who watch things happen; and, 3) people who wondered what happened."
I think there is a fourth category, and it is malignant and growing: 4) people who criticize the first kind but won't themselves do anything about it.
Democracy only works if there is accountability. As long as only a minority educate themselves about issues, talk about it with their neighbors, and express their wishes at the polls, the politicians are free to do whatever they want, which usually means serving their corporate masters, regardless of which side of the aisle they sit.
For a brief moment, 9/11 was a galvanizing event that got people fired up. Unfortunately we followed it up with a stupid war that has again created division.
Maybe America has always been like this -- periods of individual selfishness and apathy that allow politicians and big money to feed their greed. Eventually a war comes along that forces us to organize and mobilize at a national level, which leads to individual sacrifice (not only lives of troops, but also diversion of resources from consumer goods to war supplies).
Then we get lazy and apathetic again.
Who cares, I'm going to grab a beer and watch OSU win the national championship...
