A Republican's Take on Social Security

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are...a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."
- President Dwight D. Eisenhower,  1954

I believe the Texas oil millionaires he spoke of were the Hunt brothers.

So, what's your point? I don't know of any major Republican figure today who wants to do away with Social Security.

So, what's your point?

I guess you missed these Young Republicans at Republican Senator, Rick Santorum's Town Hall on Feb. 22.

Video

They are chanting "Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, social Security has got to go."

OK, so those were Young Republicans, how about former US House Majority Leader, Dick Armey.

Josh Marshall notes that the Longview (Texas) News-Journal, reported on Feb. 26th.

"Former U.S. House Majority Leader Dick Armey said Friday that Social Security should be phased out rather than saved."

Josh observes,
"Not only does Armey think Social Security should be 'phased out', he believes, as he is quoted as saying in the article, that the eventual effect of the Bush plan will be phase-out.

Now, in case folks need a precise flow-chart of how to work this, Dick Armey is the head of FreedomWorks. And FreedomWorks is one of the three or four major groups funding and organizing the push for President Bush's privatization plan.

So the head of one of the main groups funding the PR blitz for President Bush's privatization plan says Social Security should be "phased out" and that the eventual effect of the Bush plan will be phase out.

That's the point.

With apologies to Margaret Mead...

Never doubt that a small group of stupid, Texas millionaires can change the world.

All Bush & the Republicans would be doing is simply PASSING THE BUCK ONTO SOMEONE ELSE AND MAKING IT *THEIR* PROBLEM instead of the U.S. Govt.'s.

That's all.

Afterall, they don't *really* care about HARD WORKING Americans UNLESS THEY ARE IN UNIFORM & IN THE MIDDLE EAST.

They only care about YOUR VOTE come Election time. We all know that if you *think* you didn't vote for them, YOU DID SO ANYWAY SIMPLY BY STEPPING INTO THE VOTING MACHINE. Afterall, how do you think Ohio was left scratching its head after last year's Election? THE REPUBLICANS HAD THE MACHINES RIGGED!!!!

I believe anonymous qualified the post with "major Republican figure".

I don't consider the Young Republicans as a major Republican figure(s), nor do I know of any in office.

Dick Armey is a consultant, no longer in Government. Dick Armey is for a flat tax, also. That ain't gonna happen.

Rigged voting machines in Ohio? That implies voter fraud and you are indeed correct. There was voter fraud. In Wisconsin, a state won my Kerry. Substantiated by a Milwaukee Journal (a leftist rag) investigation. 4600 more voters in Milwaukee than residents (Milwaukee was 70% for Kerry).

There was voter fraud in the governor's race in Washington (the state) as substantiated by a Seattle Times (another leftist rag) investigation. It resulted in the Democratic candidate winning by a few hundred votes.

Voter fraud in Ohio? Where's the SUBSTANTIATIVE proof? There is none other than in the wishful minds of Democrats and leftist loons.

What happened was the GOP worked Ohio very diligently and got out the vote. Particularly in exurbia regions of Columbus, Cinci, Cleveland, etc. Why do you think Bush worked Warren Co. so hard (Cinci exurb). The Dems simply got beat in Ohio. Ohio has a Republican Gov, 2 Republican Senators, majority of Representatives are Republican (yes, they're RINOs, but GOP all the same) - why wouldn't you think a Republican candidate for Prez wouldn't carry that state?

"They" don't care for HARD WORKING Americans? How so? Because you're not getting free health care? You've got a high school diploma only and you're not a millionaire? You have to pay taxes for infrastructure?

Be specific. Just what sort of care is it "they" are denying you?

You're saying the former Majority Leader who is heading one of the groups funding the promotion of the President's privatization plan is not a "prominent Republican"?

Give me a break! The fact that he also favors a flat tax, which is another extreme scheme, doesn't make him less prominent.

Armey was the Majority Leader up until 2002 when he retired from Congress and Delay became Majority Leader.

In addition to eliminating Social Security - this Texan (Armey) also wants to eliminate Farm Subsidies or as Eisenhower said "Farm Programs".

Darn those facts... They just keep getting in the way of the neo con arguments.
