A Question

In 2004, West Virginia was the only state where Armed Forces recruiters met their quotas.

Why?

Is it beause we have the most patriotic young people in America?

Is it because West Virginia younguns are desparate to find a way out of the cycle of poverty that's endemic in this state?

If it is the latter, is it in the best interests of the federal government to improve their lot?

Just asking.

Why am I asking such a stupid question?

BECAUSE I CAN.

Dave you must remember that everything changed on 9/11/01.

Don't you know by asking such questions you are giving aid and comfort to the enemy?

This can't be tolerated and you must be silenced as a matter of national security.

Geez Fred,

I ask the same questions (my previous comment was SARCASM) and I have great respect for the military. My father was a Captain in the USMC, his brother a Lt. Colonel in the USMC, another Uncle was in the Navy. I have several cousins who have served including 2 serving in Iraq now. I also have friends in the military.

I appreciate and am grateful for their dedication and service.

I also don't want them placed in harm's way unless there is a clear and present danger to the U.S. The smokescreen perpetrated by the Bush administration of imminent threat from WMDs in Iraq and the rush to place the military in the line of fire was more disrespectful than any rhetoric -- it was irresponsible action.

Recruits are not stupid. Everyone knows that they will have to go Iraq. If the war in Iraq was truly about freedom or if the threat to the US was really imminent then recruiting would be better.

Exhibit 1. Compare the recruiting when we went after al Qaida in Afghanistan versus today's rates when we have diverted them from that fight to Iraq instead.
