Huntington's take on the crisis

I love the Huntingtonnews.net bulletin board.

It shows what relatively anonymous people in Huntington think about life.

The Gulf Coast disaster is much discussed on the bulletin board.

A woman who goes by the name of Huldah (Hebrew for "weasel") says there's a strong possibility that the chaos in New Orleans was orchestrated by Democrats who did it to embarrass the Republican administration.

And when a discussion arose about the possibility of bringing evacuees to Huntington, some other nameless, faceless person called Spiderman said "Huntington has enough homeless people already." His belief was corroborated by at least one other nameless, faceless person.

Admittedly, these two folks are in a minority on the board. But the minority have rights, too.

Later in the day, Huldah raised this possibility:

I'm still curious about the breech of the levies.
The timing of the breech and what (if any) actions were taken by the local government. What an opportunity to "cover up" corruption.
If the breech of the levy were to benefit anyone, who would be most likely to benefit?

I had someone tell me today that we should not bring anyone from New Orleans to West Virginia because we don't know what diseases they have.

Doesn't this discourage you? Seriously? About people in general and Huntington specifically?

Nah. In my 30-plus years of newspapering, including covering three or four major disasters, I've heard it all.

I'm still waiting for some local to say the disaster was God's punsihment for something - gambling, jazz music, belonging to the Democratic Party - so many sins to choose from.

Even though I no longer post on HNN, I still read it for laughs (and tears). I actually was surpised how long it took some of the folks on the board to blame the victims.

I'm also amused by how the same "supporters of the Iraq war" who won't sign up to fight are unwilling to support Bush's efforts to salvage the Gulf Coast.

Anonymous cowards... every one of the them.

There were two such comments made although not locally. One suggested the gay gathering that was scheduled this month in NO brought down the wrath of God. Another compared a picture of a hurricane with a fetus and proclaimed this was God's anger and vengeance because we allowed abortion.

God protect me from zealots.
